Crete
The Island of the Minoans


Crete is located at the point where the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa meet. It is the 5th largest island in the Mediterranean and is 8.335 square kilometres.


Crete has a long and rich cultural history. The plethora of ancient monuments and its glorious past have combined with its huge advancement to make Crete a unique place to live.

Heraklion
After Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras, Heraklion is the fourth largest city in Greece in both size and population. It is the capital of Crete and home to the island’s largest port. The main economic sectors of the city are tourism, agriculture and trade. It has a large number of tourist accommodations, one of the busiest airports and a bustling commercial port. Heraklion is located near the palace of Knossos which dates back to the Minoan period.
 
Chania
Chania is a city in the north-west of Crete and capital of the province of Chania. It is the second largest city of the island with a population of 60.000 residents, second to Heraklion. It was a significant Minoan city believed to be the site of ancient Cydonia. Of worthy note is the old city and harbour, the mosque of Kioutsouk Hassan (Giali Tzamissi), the Maritime Museum of Crete and the ancient city of Aptera. The city has a thriving nightlife, endless beaches and a high rate of tourism.


 
 
Rethymno
Rethymno is the capital of the Rethymno province of Crete. It attracts a large volume of tourists during the summer whilst the 7000 students that study there make the place lively the remainder of the year. It is the third largest populated city of Crete after Heraklion and Chania.


 
 

Ierapetra
Ierapetra is the southernmost city of Greece located in the province Lasithi. It is Lasithi’s largest city, and although not its capital, it is its main economic and commercial centre. Located on the southern side of Crete, Ierapetra has a history that dates back many centuries. Today it is a commercial hub where the local farmer’s produce is exported all over Europe and is a beloved place for thousands of holidaymakers.

Agios Nikolaos
Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the province of Lasithi and is located in the north of Crete and on the western side of the gulf of Meramvellou. The city is named after the Byzantine church that is located on the bay of Agios Nikolaos and in olden times it was also known as Mantraki. The current city is built on the ancient site of Latous and offers distinctive beaches, a high standard of hotels and beautiful natural surroundings.
